Olympic Games Beijing 2008

* Thursday 07 August: Two days before the Olympics will be opening, Sanna have trained without feeling any pain from her injury! She also trained again wih her spikes after she cancelled the meeting in Stockholm (DN-Galan). So, that's really good news. (pictures from that training already online!) On Sunday Sanna will run a full run and than we'll know if the injury is better... If she feels the injury a bit, she'll be competing with injections. Let's hope that that's not necessary!
* Sunday 10 August: Sanna's body is better. She's ready to compete in Beijing in the heats! Sanna helped her roommate Carolina Klüft when she was training her triple jump. That you can watch on a picture.
* 12 August: Another update from Sanna's injury. “I don’t know exactly why the pain has disappeared but last week I was able to train for the first time without suffering from anything at all for the first time in nearly six months,” Sanna said. “I’ve had a lot of painkillers since having to pull out of the World Indoor Championships final back in March [when she suffered the hamstring twinge] but my recovery has been going well in recent weeks and I’ve stopped using them. I’ve just been getting some ordinary massage and other treatment like this. But I’ve done various tests in the last week, successively harder and harder, and I’m now confident of what I can do.”
Thomas Engdahl is still erring on side of caution despite Kallur’s optimism. “She can run in the Olympics, that’s for sure. However, we must assess the situation after each race. But at the moment, the prospects look much brighter than they did a week ago.,” said Engdahl.

* 16 August 2008: The entree list is online! Tomorrow, Sanna will start in lane 9 from the first heat. The first 2 from each heat are directly qualified. And the 6 fastest times will be qualified too. If you're from Europe you can watch the heats on 13pm (Bejing time: 19pm). We will be waiting for Sanna's "season start". Although season start isn't completeley the right word to say if we're already on the Olympics... So, Sanna will be running in heat 1 and her other competetors are:
lane 2 Aurelia Trywianska-Kollasch (POL); lane 3 Micol Cattaneo (ITA); lane 4 Josephine Onyia (ESP); lane 5 Katsiaryna Paplauskaya (BLR); lane 6 Lucie Skrobakova (CZE); lane 7 Miriam Bobkova (SVK); lane 8 Nervin Yanit (TUR)
Click here to watch all the heats. (you can also watch the pb's and season bests from all the athletes here!)
* 17 August 2008: Today it's the day of the 100m hurdles heats with Susanna Kallur! After all the injury problems, she'll be there at the startline from heat 1 in lane 9! And Sanna is back on track! She became 2nd with the same time as winner Josephine Onyia: 12.68 and so she moves on to the semi-finals tomorrow. Her race was technical very good. She came not that good out of the blocks and became faster after each hurdle. She came agressive over the hurdles, that is something you can see on the pictures. She became 2nd in 12.68 and qualifies her directly for the semi-finals. Sanna's reaction time was 0.194 and the wind blew negative: -0.2m/s. The time from Sanna was also the fastest time. The second time is 12.96 set by Brigitte Foster-Hylton (JAM) and Vonette Dixon (JAM). Lolo Jones won easily her heat in 12.71.
Click here to watch full results. Below you can watch top-3. Below you can wtach the video from Sanna's heat!
1. Josephine Onyia (ESP) 12.86 Q
2. Susanna Kallur (SWE) 12.86 Q
3. Nevn Yanit (TUR) 12.94 q

Sanna's reaction: * "I was a little bit nervous. I haven't a pretty good start, but it's ok. It was actually pretty nice. When the warming-up felt clear it was 'yes'. I didnt feel anything, not the back and shin bone disturbed me." Sanna believes that he can run faster tomorrow: "Yes, it feels like I can take more." She said with a big smile to SVT.se. (Source: SVT.se)
* "A pretty good time. It became 68? The same as the winner?" Kallur said in the mixed zone after her race to Aftonbladet. "The body felt good. Yes I was a little bit nervous, but that was a good thing because I could take every hurdle full." (Source: Sportbladet.se)

* Monday 18 August 2008: After her injury-problems Sanna is back on track. She'll be running the semi-final today. The time that the race will be held is 19.40 pm Beijing time (13.40pmEuropean Time). Sanna will be running in the second semi-final in lane 6. Her competetors are in lane 2: Reïna-Flor koti (FRA) ;lane3: Sara Claxton (GBR); lane4: Brigitte Foster-Hylton (JAM) ;lane 5:Vonette Dixon (JAM) ;lane7:Dawn Harper (USA) ;lane8: Damu Cherry (USA) ;lane9: Anay Tejeda (CUB).
The first 4 of each heat will be automatically qualified. Click here for the startlist.

Sanna won't be Olympic Champion 100m hurdles 2008. She went out in the semi-finals on a dramatic way. She started agressive and hit the first hurdle. Because of this she fell and was out of cometition. So no Olympic Final for Sanna this year in Beijing. For the moment Asia doesn't bring lot of luck for Sanna. Remember last year in Osaka where she became 4th after Michelle Perry (USA) touched her on the last hurdle in the final. Sanna was - of course - very dissapointed. This wasreally a chance for her to run the final. She was able to finish with the 4 best. And so, Sanna still haven't run an Olympic final... In Athens (2004) Sanna ran in the semi-final a PB, but she didn't made the final. The heat was won by Damu Cherry. The fastest time was set by world indoor champion LoloJones in 12.43. That's the world leading time and a PB for Lolo Jones, who's no the absolute favourite now Sanna is out. Sanna ran again with injections against the pain as a precaution. she also did this in the heats. Sanna promised to SVT.se that she'll be going on for another 4 years until London 2012. So that's good news, maybe she'll have more luck in Europe (London).
Below you can watch top-3 of the heat. Click here to watch full results. Below you can watch a movie from that dramatic race...
1. Damu Cherry (USA) 12.62 Q
2. Dawn Harper (USA) 12.66 Q
3. Brigitte Foster-Hylton (JAM) 12.76 Q

Reactions:
* Sanna: "I didn't have time to think, suddenly I was standing on my head. I felt like I was in superform. I didn't feel anything from the injuries during the warming-up and I really wanted to run fast. I'm going furhter for at least 4 years." Sanna said to SVT.se (Source: TV4.se & SVT.se) Bridgitte Foster-Hylton tried to cheer Sanna up: "It's a strange year for you." She said to Sanna.

* Delloreen Ennis-London (JAM): "It's Terrible."
* Yelena Isinbayeva (RUS): "It's so bad for her. She had some bad luck this year, but next time she'll win."
* Her trainer Karin Torneklint: "She wanted to run fast right now. She was too soon by the first hurdle and she hadn't the time to rise her leg." (Source: TV4.se)
* article IAAF: After eventually coming to terms with her disappointment, Kallur finally stood up and walked towards the finish line trying to hold back tears under the supportive applaud of the crowd. In probably the kindest of gestures, Foster-Hylton waited for her and spared a few words which Kallur visibly appreciated as she even managed a smile at the TV camera. "I guess I tried to much," commented Kallur. "I wanted to run too fast. For the first time this summer, I felt in really good shape. But I pushed too much. I hope I'll be back on the track again in a few weeks. It's not as bad (physically) as it is mentally." (Sourrce: IAAF)

* Tuesday 19 August 2008: Sanna looked better this morning when she supported her friend Carolina Klüft while she was jumping in the qualifications from the long jump. You wan watch some pictures off Sanna, supporting 'Carro' (Carolina Klüft).

March 23

Summer 2008

* 04 April 2008: Susanna and Jenny are going to Monto Gordo (Portugal) and in May they're going to Rhodos. Other Swedish athletics stars like Johan Wissman and Christian Olsson are going to train in Makaraska (Croatia). From 28 April until 13 May, Carolina Klüft will be on a trainings camp together with Alhaji Jeng (Pole Vault) and Stefan Holm (high jump) in Formia (Italy).
There's a picture online from (a stressing) Sanna together with her family during a hockey-game, a derby between Leksand and Mora...
* 29 April 2008: After being in Portugal and have trained there, Jenny and Sanna are going to Rhodos to train there. But Sanna felt again the pain from her last injury. So her coach, Karin Torneklint, said that she has to train less hard at 90%. It's to hope that her injury evoluates good and that she can start her season 24th May in Hengelo (the Netherlands) at the FBK-Thales Games.
* 10 May 2008: Sanna will have a lot of competition at the Olympics in Bejing. At the meeting in Doha, her competetors ran fast. Brigitte Foster (JAM) won in 12.56 only 7/100 above Sanna's PB and Lolo Jones (USA) became 2nd in 12.65. And then there's Damu Cherry (JAM), after she was suspended for doping (2 years, steroïd anoblide) she ran 12.47 in Martinique. In the same rac, Delloreen Ennis-London ran 12.50. Sanna's trainer Karin Torneklint said that they're only focussing on Sanna and not on here competetors. Last year there were only three times inder 12.47 (Sanna's PB) - Michelle Perry, 12.44 and 12.46 and Virgina Powell 12.45. But Sanna will be sharper than last year. Her trainings are going well. "Yes, she's almost training back full. A time ago she ran again hurdles and it was fun." Said Torneklint. Later in May there's the seasonsstart from Susanna. Other competetors in Hengelo are Lolo Jones, Vonette Dixon, Danielle Caruthers.
* 13 May 2008: Sanna will delaye her season start because she still feels something at her hamstring. Her coach Tjörborn said that it's only for safety it's not that she's back injured. So Sanna announced ten days before the GP in Hengelo that she will not start there. Her coach also said that they need to focuse themselves on the Olympic Games. Sanna is still on a trainings camp in Rhodos and her trainer said that she's stronger than ever! So that's good news... She has done stabilisation exercises and it looks awesome. Now will Sanna open her season at the Golden League in Berlin on the 1st of June.
* 31 May 2008: It may be possible that Sanna have a competetor less in Bejing named the Worldchampion Michelle Perry. Perry is injured and it's possible that she can't compete at the US-trials for the Olympics.
* 01 June 2008: Sanna's seasonsopener in the Golden League in Berlin went well! She became 2nd in 12.54 after Josephine Onya from Spain (12.50). She set a new Spanish record. Sanna won't win the Golden League jackpot this year, but she said that she will compete in every competition of the Golden League.
Sanna's reaction: "It's a great season start. I can't be unhappy with this race. After a long brake since Valencia in March this is my first race. I know my starting reaction was not my best, but my feelings are very positive. I could not ask for more. I know I'm out of the jackpot ravce, but the season is just starting. I'm still planning to compete at all Golden League meetings."
Below you can wath the top-3 from the ISTAF-Golden League in Berlin: Click here for full results of the Golden League! Click here to watch Sanna's race (Swedish: SVT.se).
1. Josephine Onyia (ESP) - 12.50
2. Susanna Kallur (SWE) - 12.54
3. Lolo Jones (USA) - 12.57
* 06 June 2008: Sanna became 3rd after Josephine Oniya and Lolo Jones at the Golden League meeting in Oslo. Sanna had a poor start, her reaction time: 0.210. Onyia ran again a strong race, this may be a new 'enemey' for Sanna. 'Her start was better than last week. But it looked like she ran quit slow and simple." said TV4 expert Lennart Julin. Sanna's reaction: "It was really a bad day at work. I didn't want to work out today." Sanna said. "I don't suceed in improving myself. Bad start, bad race." Sanna said dissapointed to TV4. "No, it's like that. It goes good and it goes bad." Sanna saw a few causes: "First of all I had - again - a bad reaction. And I didn't feel good, I was stresed before the start." Click here to watch full results. Click here to watch Sanna in action (svt.se).
1. Josephine Onyia (ESP) 12.59
2. Lolo Jones (USA) 12.66
3. Susanna Kallur (SWE) 12.71
* 15 June 2008: Sanna won't compete at the European Cup in Turkey next weekend (22 & 23 June) because she suffers from a new injury... So Carro's next competition will be on July 11th at the Golden Gala (GL) in Rome. It's her right leg that hurts, Sanna laready felt it at the Golden League meeting in Oslo and that's a reason why she didn't run full there. "After a thouroughly search and röntgensearch, I got a positiv answer from doctor Leif Swärd. The pain comes from an earlier stressfactur." Kallur says. So Sanna has to rest the main part of the spring because of this injury. A positif point is that her Olympics won't be in danger. "She can do an alternative training to get away the pain and rest." said Swedish national teamdoctor Sverker Nilsson. But Sanna still got some small problems with the same hamstring as in Valencia...
* 14 July 2008: After not competing at the European Cup and the Golden Gala (GL) in Rome, Sanna will also miss the golden league in Paris for the same reason: her injury. Her manager Daniel Wessfeldt: 'It's frustrating because every cancelled competition is a dissapointing.'  'I'ts dificult when my leg hurts. It feels like a wise decision to keep going with training without doing a hard hurdlerun.' Sanna said in a pressmessage. 'In stead of this, I'll focus myself on the DN-Galan in Stockholm on 22th July. I hope to be prepared till that date for a hurdle competition and that can uprise the chance for a better OG start.'
Oter news: After the US trials are over, we know Sanna's competetors for the Olympics. Only the first 3 athletes from each competition go to the Olympics. Sanna's competetors from the US are: Lolo Jones, Damu Cherry and Dawn Harper. So Michelle Perry won't compete at Bejing, she's also suffering from an injury. Michelle Perry went out competition in the semi-finals she ran 12.79 and became 6th in her semi-final. Lolo Jones ran very fast: 12.45 in her semi-final! Damu Cherry ran 12.47 in her semi-final. In the final Lolo Jones was outstanding! She ran 12.29, but with too miuch wind (+3.8) the second was Damu Cherry with 12.58 and the third was Dawn Harper with 12.62.
* 22 July 2008: Today it's the DN-Galan in Stockholm, normally Sanna will be competing with injections in her leg against the pain. The doctors said thatt nothing would happen if she run the 100m hurdles. And that was the plan until the warming-up. Sanna wasn't announced for the 100m hurdles run. She didn't start at the DN-Galan today because she found thath her leg wasn't feeling well enough t compete... She didn't feel any great pain, but she felt something in her leg and she wouldn't take any risks. By the way Lolo Jones won the competition in 12.64 after a false start. Sanna want to be careful with her injury in an Olympic year, that's the resaon why she didn't start. But she went on stage to recieve her 'medal' for running the world (indoor) record of the 60m hurdles. Sanna was a little bit dissapointed, but it's better to don't start now then missing the Olympics in August! I hope that Sanna will be ok in Bejing.
* 23 July 2008: Sanna really wants to run a competition before the Olympics start. That's why she will be running in Karlstad next Monday on July 28th at the Karlstad GP (Götagalan). "I hope I can really run there." Sanna said yesterday. Click here to go to the site rom the Karlstad GP.
* 25 July 2008: Sanna decided to NOT compete in Karlstad. As a safety-measure Sanna has chosen to not start at Karlstad GP on Monday, but she'll spare herself for the Olympics in Bejing. "I don't wan to take any risks before the Olympics. It's not ideal to prepare, but a wise decision," Sanna wrote in a press message.
* 21 August 2008: While the Olympics are still going on, Sanna's manager said that she'll compete in Zürich at the Golden League next weekend (29 August). Because of this, Sanna won't compete at the Finnkampen. It's the ideal way to take revenge for her semi-final in Beijing. Almost the whole top from Beijing will be in Zürich. Zürich is also the place where Sanna took revenge for her 4th place in Osaka last year. And in Brussels she won too. Let's hope for her that it will be the same this year! Normally Sanna will be competing in Brussels (5 September) for the Golden League and Stuttgart for the World Athletics Final (13 September).

Especially after her last hurdle, because she can win a few hundrets on that last line to the finish. Agne Bergvall and the sisters did this together. He said that it's time for Torneklint and that she's got now the responsability of the two girls.

* 24 January 2007: Susanna said on her bolg: 'I've just trained intensive last week. On Monday afternoon, I landed in Stockholm after a trainingscamp in South Africa and later I get into a hotel for the Idrottsgalan in 'The Globe'. At the end of the Gala I get a little bit nerveus. I want to start the season as soon as possible.I didn't expect that I get that high in the Jerringspriset but it feels also good that Zlatan won. Peronaly, I believed that Carro (Carolina Klüft) or Anja (Pärson) would win, but Zlatan is also a justified winner.'

Susanna won the 60m hurdles at the Norwich Union in Glasgow. It's the 6th time in a rowe that Sanna won in Glasgow. She won in 7.81 that's only 1/100 above her PB, 7.80 that she set in 2005 at the European Indoor Championships in Madrid. The time she set today is also a new World Best Year Prestation, She improved tha prestation with 64/100! She crossed all the competetors and set a best Year Prestation. 2. Lolo Jones        USA 8.05 = SB
3. Judith Ritz        GER 8.15 = SB
Reactions: (Sportbladet.se) 'I've never ran that fast in my season opener. I'm suprised.' Kallur said. 'I thought about a time about 7.90, but it gets better. I've always liked this lanes here and they fit me perfect.' Susanna hasn't lost a competition on the 60m indoor since the World Indoor Championships in Moscow 2006. Her biggest goal for the indoorseason is of course the World Indoor Championships in Valencia (7-9 March).
* 29 January 2008: Susanna has set a new Swedish and Personal Record on the 60m hurdles tonight at the Samsung Galan in Göteborg. In the heats, Sanna ran 7.90, but later in the finale she was unstopable. Seh was and is simply the best. She grabs the best worldyear prestation, again and better the Swedish record. The record that she set is only 6/100 above the Worldrecord from Ljudmilla Enguist. It's also the 6th best prestation ever! About that worldrecord Sanna says: 'I don't think about that because last year I did (with the Swedish outdoor record) and got nervous and stressed.' Sanna is definantly in good shape, after Glasgow last weekend when she set a very good time, now in Göteborg, she set a Swedish record. Way to go Sanna! We look forward to see you compete in Valencia! Click here for the full results. Click here to watch her heat. Click here to watch her recordrace. Below you wan watch top-3.

* 02 February 2008: Today, Sanna will compete in Stuttgart at the Sparkassen-Cup. Sanna won her heat in her second best run ever: 7.78! This time is also a meetingrecord! She shares this record together with Brigita Bukovec (Slovenia) she ran that time in 1999. Sanna won before Kellie Wells from the USA (8.04) with a wide margin. Later on the evening Sanna will run the final at 19.49h (local time). Click here to watch the results of the heat. After Sanna won the heat in a very strong time, she put down a new Swedish record: 7.72! That's only 3/100 above the 18 year old worldrecord!!! First the clock said 7.71, but later the time was corriged to 7.72.She improved again her PB and the Swedish record, that Sanna in form is, may already be clear. The time 7.72 is Sanna 's best time ever and the second time of all times! Sanna is ready for Valencia (maybe for a worldrecord to??)! Sanna won, again, with a wide margin from Lolo Jones. She ran the perfect race! 'I've no other explanation than that I could train healthy hurdles. What I couldn't do last year. Now I came into the indoorseason like I finished my season with exact he same hurdle-feeling.' she said to Aftonbladet. 'My start wasn' good, I gave my start away. I felt it was bad.' Do you think about the worldrecord? 'It feels onlogical when I start to think about it on the startline. I'll look after my race to the result. I always run bad when I think about I time I want to beat.' Susanna said to Aftonbladet.se. 'I havn't been injured this year. I've been able to hurdle more than in previous seasons.' On the Question isn't it a little too early in the season to be running so fast? Kallur said: 'No, that's not EVER a problem.' Sanna laughed (Source: IAAF). Click here to watch her race. Click here to watch full results!

Click here for full results of the final! Sanna had a good start and ran very fast to a time that was 1/100 above the 18-year old record. The time stood directly still on 7.68 and was waiting for the official time and that was 1/100 better then Ludmilla Enguist' world record. Sanna was very happy and delighted, when she got the flowers in her hands she ran a lap of honour. Congrats Sanna! Sanna ran very relaxed with giving the intention that she can ran even faster. But still the clock stopped at a new worldrecord. 'It was a very good race.' said Agne Bergvall 'But I know that she can ran faster.'  Before the race Sanna said that she had pain in er leg in Stuttgart but that after a good massage everything back ok was.
'I find it hard to believe that it's true.' Said a very happy Sanna to SVD.se straight after her race. 'When I saw the time, I couldn't believe it at first.' Over her heat Sanna says: 'I had a bad start, that's why my time was 7.78.' In the final it went much better like we all now. 'I felt myself fresh and I thought, when I have a good start, the race can be good.' Kallur said to Sportexpressen.se. 'It was a better race than in Stuttgart (7.72). I had a better start. My race was like that in Ghotenburg (7.75), but on a faster track.' Funny aspect: Sanna got the number 168, the same numbers as the new worldrecord... Below you can watch the video + an interview!

The reporter from the BBC asked Sanna what it is like to be a world record holder. Ans Sanna said that she couldn't still believe it that she has got that record now. She said that maybe in a couple weeks that she can believe the fact of having a world record. Sanna also said that her technique has never been better. So that's a very good sign for the World Indoor Championships in Valencia (7-9 March) and of course for the Olympics later. Click here for the full results. Below you can watch the race.

* 08 March 2008: Heats: Sanna set a new stap to the World Indoor title by winning her heat in 7.87. After two false starts Sanna went not that good out of the blocks (reaction time: 0.259). But Sanna won her heat easily before Lacena Golding-Clark (JAM) and Eline Berings (BEL) who set a new NR with a mark of 8.05. Later Sanna will run the semi-final. Click here to watch full results of the heats. Sanna's reaction: "I am feeling good here in Valencia. I know that it is a fast track. It felt hard underfoot, and that is good for me. I don't know if I will break my world record this evening. But I would like to get the victory like in the European Indoor Championships in Madrid three years ago."
Semi-finale: Sanna won't start in the semi-finale. She felt pain in her leg and will not take the risk, so Sanna won't start in the semi-final... Of Course Sanna was verry dissapointed, she deserved that gold medal if you watch the whole indoor season. Sanna said that she almost faint by the thought of an injury at the hamstrings. By the warming-up she had a bleeding at the backside of her right thigh. "And than came the thought: 'God why is it happens now?'. But this is topsport. When someone is in good shape this can happen." Sanna said with tears in her eyes. It wasn't her good form that did break that thigh-muscle. "I was in very good shape and I maybe did my fastest start ever when this happend." Swedish TT asked Sanna if she could break the worldrecord (7.68) in the final: "It would be ridiculous to speculate about it now. It's not my thing to do that." Swedish TT asked Sanna what would happened if she ran the semi-final: "I would never ran that race because I felt that something wa broken. I couldn't ran hard if you don't want to damage it. It would be worse when I fall after the third hurdle or later." This kind of injury knows Sanna a little bit from the Olympic year 2004, that year Sanna had to rest 4 months because of a thigh injury. "It was also an Olympic year. That year I could run in May, but I could go full at the Olympics. I'm not worried about the future, the only thing that the injury did whas that I couldn't run today. I can train in three days back hurdles. The Olympics are a big goal and I've got a good indoorseason." Susanna Kallur still got no golden medal at a WC. But it can come in Bejing in August: "If I start in the final of the Olympics? Maybe."
* 15 March 2008: Sanna is training back! But still she has to be careful, in two weeks she can train full. She said that it's faster than expected that seh can run and train back. So that's good news...
